Accounts Lost Plus Incorrect Currency
Jim Spiers
When I logged in today (March 13, 2025) all of my institutions and accounts were missing and could not be refreshed. So, I set up the accounts again and re-imported the account details and transactions. Now, all of my transactions have been converted to USD from CAD. I did set the Currency to CAD in my profile.
Why did my accounts disappear and why is my currency not being displayed correctly?

Hi Jim - that sounds super strange that we never heard before. Is it still the case? Could you please attach a screenshot?
By quickly looking at your account data, I didn't tell the issue that just mentioned? Is it possible a temporary network issue or hitting a system upgrading time? Please confirm and let us know.

Shawn Cao Thanks for getting back to me. When i noticed that the accounts were blank, I simply added them back again. As a clarification, upon further review I discovered that the CIBC accounts were all properly displayed in CAD$. However, the Meridiancu bank accounts were all displayed in USD$ even though I had specified the currency as CAD$ in the system settings. I have since deleted the Meridian accounts but will try to set them up again.
It is possible, as you suggest, that there may have been a network issue. I had to reboot my modem to re-enable access to my TV. After I add the Meridian accounts again I will let you know if I had any issues.

Jim Spiers Hi Jim - if I remember it correctly, this account itself comes as USD, but since you have set it as CAD in system settings. All transactions will be converted and displayed as CAD, it should be shown as something like $CA123.45
you can check its transactions and confirm if this is the case. Otherwise, let me know where you see it displayed as USD, and we can look into it further.

Shawn Cao, what you are saying frankly, makes no sense. Meridian is a Canadian bank just like the CIBC. All of the transactions at Meridian are in Canadian dollars. Several days ago when I first started using Fina I did not have this problem. The accounts then disappeared possibly due to an internet problem on my end. So, I set up Meridian again and now everything defaults to USD$. The Account page "assumes" this bank is in USD but it is not. It is a Canadian banking institution. How could I possibly reconcile my online Meridian bank account with Fina if Fina is assuming the amounts are USD then converting them to a CAD equivalent thus overstating the values.
I am attaching two screen shots for your use. One shows the Account as USD when the actual amounts are in CAD. The second screenshot shows the Transaction which has taken the original CAD amount as USD then converted that amount to a supposed Canadian equivalent. The transaction in question is actually $20 CAD which has then been converted to another Canadian amount assuming it was in USD.
I hope this helps.
I really like using Fina. Up till now it was downloading my transactions accurately and I was able to reconcile my Meridian accounts in CAD. Also, categories are fairly easy to use and modify. Unit this latest problem, Fina was the only program I have found that actually did the best job with Canadian banks.
Please get back to me again if you need any additional information.
Thanks for your help.
Ps. I also provided these screen shots to Shawn Cao.

Jim Spiers I see, Fina expects a currency is set for each account. I think the account currency is either set as USD faulty by Plaid or not set which defaults to USD if system currency not set yet. Once a while the aggregator like Plaid sends faulty information.
Please clarify if everything is working as expected now, if not, we can debug into it and find a fix for you.

Actually no, the Meridian accounts are not working correctly.
First of all I am not using Plaid. I already know that Plaid does not work with some Canadian Banks, like CIBC, so I am linking my accounts with Moneykit. Second, there are multiple Institutions in FINA with the name Meridian. If you look at this list you will see one, in particular, named: Meridian Credit Union (Canada) with the symbol MCU and the web site meridiancu.ca. This is the institution I am trying to use.
A screen capture is attached for your information.
So, my first question is Why would this institution use a default currency of USD?
My second question is, are you suggesting that I use Plaid instead?
Thanks Shawn
Shawn Cao
Jim Spiers At this moment, I think MoneyKit set Meridian account's currency wrongly as USD (as you know it was wrong), we will need either them to correct it or introduce a manual override to correct it to CAD, so the system won't apply the USD -> CAD conversion for all transactions in the account.
Sorry about that, please allow us some time to figure a proper solution and get back to you with updates.
Shawn Cao
Jim Spiers Hi Jim, could you try Plaid for this bank and see if everything works.
If not, we have to come up with override solution for this case that MoneyKit sends wrong currency.

Thanks for looking into this Shawn. I was actually thinking the same thing. I will delete the existing Meridian accounts and add this institution back using Plaid. I will get back to you with the results.

Shawn,
I set up the Meridian accounts using Plaid with the following results:
- All accounts are being reported in CAD$;
- All accounts are showing correct totals, reconciled with my online bank account;
However,
- No transaction details are being reported for any investment accounts (TFSA-Tax Free Savings Accounts);
- As a result, I cannot create reports that summarize all transactions;
- On the other hand, for the CIBC, Moneykit is reporting transaction details for TFSA Investment accounts and setting the default currency to CAD$ for all CIBC accounts;
Questions:
- Can Plaid be corrected to report transaction details for TFSA Investment Accounts? Or,
2. Can Moneykit be corrected so it will report the proper default currency for Meridian Canada accounts?
I would like to stay with FinaMoney, but either Plaid needs to be corrected or Moneykit needs to be modified to report the proper default currency.
In the meantime, I cannot create any valid transaction reports that will be of any use.
Thanks Shawn. I really appreciate the customer service that you are providing for Fina.
Let me know if you need any other information.

Jim Spiers Thanks for the detailed report. I totally understand the pain here.
Due to the limitation posed by both aggregators as you observed, we are really trying to make it, but it is a bit difficult at the moment. We will report the issue to MoneyKit and hope they can correct it for us.
Will come back once I have updates for you!
Jim Spiers
Shawn Cao, Thanks very much Shawn. I am hoping Moneykit can make the currency work.
